NVDA + GOOGL: The AI Infrastructure Trade Gets a Reality Check From Samsung, But the Fundamentals Tell a Different Story

Research focus has shifted from AAPL/MSFT to NVDA/GOOGL, with GOOGL's extraordinary +109.86% 52-week performance now commanding attention as the stealth AI infrastructure winner, while Samsung's earnings miss has introduced near-term NVDA sentiment headwinds that were not present in the prior post's framework.

NVDA at $197.58 is clinging to a modest +4.75% YTD gain while GOOGL at $369.95 is quietly putting up the most impressive performance in the Mag 7 with +17.54% YTD and a staggering +109.86% over the past 52 weeks. Samsung's earnings miss is rattling chip sentiment today, but the structural AI infrastructure story underpinning both names remains intact — the question is whether NVDA's valuation discount to GOOGL on a P/E basis reflects a genuine derating or an opportunity.

Let me start with the number that deserves more attention than it's getting: GOOGL is up +109.86% over the past 52 weeks. That is not a typo. In a year where the Mag 7 narrative has been dominated by NVDA's data center dominance and MSFT's Copilot story, Alphabet has quietly doubled. At $369.95 today, with a market cap of $4.47 trillion, GOOGL is now trading at 27.97x TTM earnings and 19.81x EV/EBITDA — premium multiples, but ones that feel increasingly justified given the Search + Cloud + Gemini monetization arc playing out in real time. The Reddit AI licensing partnership and the aggressive Vertex AI buildout are exactly the kind of incremental signals that institutional money follows when re-rating a platform business. GOOGL's profit margin at 39.2% and operating margin at 36.1% are best-in-class among the hyperscalers, and a P/S of 10.58x on $422.5 billion in TTM revenue is not cheap, but it's not absurd for a business compounding at this rate.

Now to NVDA, which is where the session's drama is concentrated. The Samsung earnings miss — despite a 19-fold profit increase that paradoxically disappointed elevated AI expectations — has triggered a sector-wide chip sell-off, and NVDA is trading at $197.58, up just +4.75% YTD despite its 52-week gain of +25.03%. The Samsung read-through for NVDA is complicated: Samsung's HBM supply constraints and execution gaps are actually a relative positive for the NVDA ecosystem, which relies on SK Hynix's superior HBM3E. But the broader message markets took from Samsung is that the AI hardware demand bar has been set so high that any miss — even a structural beat on an absolute basis — creates a sell signal. This is the NVDA paradox right now. The fundamentals are exceptional. A $4.74 trillion market cap, $253.5 billion in TTM revenue, 62.97% profit margin, and a P/E of 29.95x is — and I want to be precise here — one of the most compelling valuation setups in large-cap tech if you believe the data center capex cycle is still in innings three or four.

Let me put the NVDA vs. GOOGL valuation juxtaposition plainly: NVDA trades at 29.95x TTM earnings and 24.10x EV/EBITDA, while GOOGL trades at 27.97x TTM earnings and 19.81x EV/EBITDA. On a pure multiple basis, GOOGL looks cheaper, but NVDA's revenue growth trajectory, operating leverage, and the structural AI infrastructure supercycle give it a different quality of earnings. NVDA's beta of 2.211 versus GOOGL's 1.247 tells you exactly what the options market and institutional positioning are saying: NVDA is a higher-conviction, higher-volatility bet on AI capex, while GOOGL is increasingly being treated as the intelligent infrastructure layer — search monetization, cloud compute, and Gemini deployment all compounding simultaneously. The semiconductor ETF data is also worth noting contextually: PSI's performance confirms that the fabless chip design thesis is working spectacularly, even as individual names like NVDA face sentiment headwinds from supplier-side disappointments like Samsung.

For portfolio construction purposes, I am constructively bullish on GOOGL as the better risk-adjusted AI infrastructure trade right now. The 52-week performance already reflects significant re-rating, but the forward earnings revisions are likely to remain positive given Cloud segment acceleration and Gemini enterprise attachment. NVDA remains the highest-conviction long in my coverage on a 12-18 month view — the Samsung noise is precisely that, noise — but the near-term path is cloudier with beta-driven volatility and an AI demand expectation bar that punishes any ambiguity. If we get a pullback in NVDA toward the low-$180s on Samsung-related sector contagion, that is a gift, not a reason to reduce. The structural AI compute story has not changed; the market is just recalibrating the pace of that story, and NVDA is the most exposed name to that recalibration on a short-term basis.

Good framing, but the Samsung read-through may be overstated — NVDA's constraints have been supply-side, not demand-side, so a memory/foundry miss doesn't necessarily indict datacenter GPU spend. What I'd flag is the macro backdrop: QQQ is up +16.4% YTD, which means NVDA at +4.7% is actually lagging its own benchmark by a wide margin — that's not a "clinging" story, that's underperformance that needs explaining. GOOGL outperforming the tape this cleanly while carrying both search and cloud exposure is the more interesting signal here.
